The Isle of Wight is linked to the mainland ports of Lymington, Southampton and
Portsmouth by vehicle ferries, high speed passenger catamarans and hovercraft,
although we assume that most visitors will bring a vehicle (the bus service is, well, rural).

There are two major ferry operators, and information about these
and links to their websites can be found below.

Please check with the above contacts for ferry inclusive prices - these can offer
better value for money than booking accommodation and ferry separately.

Wightlink operates car ferries from Portsmouth to Fishbourne (near Ryde)
and from Lymington to Yarmouth.

Their website provides latest timetables (these vary from summer to winter),
online booking, travel information and maps.

Red Funnel operates car ferries and a passenger service from Southampton to Cowes*.
It has the unusual distinction of having once had the longest company name on record:
The Southampton, Isle of Wight & South of England Royal Mail Steam Packet Co.

*Passenger ferries go to West Cowes, but cars go to East Cowes, which is across the river.
This is not a problem, as if you bring a car, you will want to be on the East side anyway.

Their website also provides timetables, online booking, travel information and maps.

There is also a hovercraft service between Southsea (near Portsmouth) and Ryde,
although this is for passengers only. It is very quick, however, and so useful for excursions.
